Congratulations and Thank you to Coach Porritt

After twenty two seasons (1989-93, 1999-2015) at the helm of Eaglet Varsity Basketball at St. Mary’s, George Porritt has decided to step down as head coach. During his tenure, the basketball program experienced unprecedented growth and success, finishing with a career record of 336-180. Coach Porritt led the Eaglets to ten Catholic League Divisional titles, six Catholic League Championships, three City Championships, twelve District titles, six Regional Championships, two State Semi-Final appearances and one State title. Coach Porritt helped countless Eaglets pursue their dream of playing college basketball. Coach Porritt will continue to serve as Athletic Director and Head Football Coach. As Athletic Director, he will also be a part of the selection committee to identify the next head coach of the varsity basketball team. On behalf of a grateful educational community, we would like to thank George Porritt for his leadership of and commitment to the basketball program at Orchard Lake St. Mary’s.

Winning is a part of the St. Mary's tradition. While we do not require students to participate in sports, all students are encouraged to do so, and the participation is overwhelming. We believe that athletics is a key component in creating brotherhood and in educating well-rounded students. Traditionally, St. Mary's has a role for both the gifted athlete and the first-time participant. Involvement and a sense of belonging are the keys. Junior varsity and freshmen level teams help to round out a thriving athletic program. As both Athletic Director and Coach, George Porritt has built a reputation as one of the finest educators/coaches in the Catholic League.  Any inquiries into St. Mary's athletic programs may be directed to him at (248) 683-0530 or gporritt@stmarysprep.com.
