"Great season" has painful ending

ORCHARD LAKE--Ouch!  "That wasn't the way we wanted to finish up," said Coach George Porritt about the Eaglets' season-ending 42-0 loss to Davison in the first round of the Class A Division 2 state tournament.  Yet, the shellacking didn't blemish St. Mary's overall 7-3 campaign.  "We had a great season with some great victories,"  Porritt said, pointing to wins over Detroit Country Day, Dearborn Divine Child, Warren DeLasalle, (Division 2 state finalist) Birmingham Brother Rice and (Division 8 state champs) Detroit St. Martin DePorres, all highly-regarded and state-ranked squads.

The last two wins were noteworthy.  St. Mary's defense limited Brother Rice to 141 yards offense in a 20-0 shutout that qualified the Eaglets for the Catholic League Prep Bowl and the state playoffs.  Junior fullback Malcolm Arrington scored from two and 19 yards out to pace the offense.

In the Prep Bowl staged at the Detroit Lions' Ford Field, Porritt called the see-saw, last-second 33-28 win over DePorres a "classic game against a great team."  With 91 seconds to play in the game, DePorres scored to take a 28-27 lead.  Junior flanker Zachary Stogdill returned the ensuing kickoff 80 yards to DePorres' 10-yard line.  Two plays later, with 38 seconds remaining, senior fullback Casey Treadaway burst into the end zone to complete a thrilling victory.

Just as high as the Eaglets were after the DePorres game, they were flat and uninspired against Davison, managing just 75 yards offense compared to the Cardinals' 427 yards.  Life goes on.  Porritt is already anticipating his 16th year as head coach in the fall with the prospect of 25 returning lettermen.
