St. Mary's To Open Season Against Country Day

ORCHARD LAKE--The Fall 2004 football season "kicks off" on Saturday, August 28th with the 27th renewal of the Orchard Lake St. Mary's Preparatory-Detroit Country Day School "Gridiron Award" classic at 7:00 pm in the Pontiac Silverdome.

The game is part of the Catholic High School League Kickoff Classic held annually at the Pontiac Silverdome.  St. Mary's and Country Day's rivalry dates back to 1976 with St. Mary's holding a 15-11 edge.  St. Mary's has won 10 of the last 12 games, beating Country Day in Birmingham 23-14 in 2003.

Last year St. Mary's finished with a record of 7-3, with wins over Detroit Country Day, Dearborn Divine Child, Warren De La Salle Collegiate, Division 2 state finalist Birmingham Brother Rice, and Division 8 state champs Detroit St, Martin de Porres.  St. Mary's 20-0 shutout victory over Brother Rice qualified the Eaglets for the Catholic Prep Bowl and the state playoffs.  In the Prep Bowl played at Ford Field, home of the Detroit Lions, the Eaglets beat DePorres 33-28 on a last-minute touchdown by senior running back Casey Treadaway, two plays following a 80-yard kickoff return by junior defensive back Zach Stogdill.

This year the Eaglets move up to Michigan High School Athletic Association Class A in football and basketball state tournaments for the next two years, and the Eaglet players and coaches are looking forward to the challenge.
