Gridiron Trophy up for grabs Friday night
ORCHARD LAKE--The Eaglets take their high-powered offense on the road for the second week in a row when they visit the Yellowjackets of Birmingham Detroit Country Day School for the 28th renewal of the Orchard Lake St. Mary's Preparatory-Detroit Country Day School "Gridiron Award" classic at 7:00 pm on Friday, September 2.
St. Mary's and Country Day's rivalry dates back to 1976 with St. Mary's holding a 16-11 edge. St. Mary's has won 11 of the last 13 games, beating Country Day in the Pontiac Silverdome in the 2004 opener for both teams 36-0.
Both teams come into the game off stellar first week wins. St. Mary's trounced Oxford 44-3, and Country Day beat Monroe 41-35.
A standing-room-only crowd is expected, with the St. Mary's Red Rowdies getting their game fuel from "Rychcik's Chili" at the traditional parking lot tailgate party.
Last year St. Mary's finished with a record of 11-2, losing in the MHSAA Division 2 Championship game to #1-ranked Muskegon, 31-7.
