Coach George Porritt Nominated for NFL Award
ORCHARD LAKE--St. Mary's Athletic Director and Varsity Football Coach George Porritt has been nominated for the National Football League's High School Football Coach of the Year Award. Coach Porritt was nominated by David Bowens (Prep '95), who plays for the Miami Dolphins.
The award was initiated in 1995 by NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue to honor coaches who have had a profound impact on the athletic and personal development of an NFL player. Cedric Jones, Senior Director, Youth Football, commented that " [Coach Porritt's] nomination demonstrates the impact that [Coach Porritt] have had on David and the respect [Coach Porritt] still receive from him."
A blue ribbon panel, which includes NFL greats Bill Walsh and Chuck Noll, will review the nominations. Finalists will be named in October 2005, and the national winner will be announced near the end of the NFL regular season and that individual will be invited to attend the Super Bowl at Ford Field as a guest of the NFL.
Coach Porritt has been Head Varsity Football Coach of the Eaglets since 1989. His Eaglet teams have
compiled an impressive record, which includes 7 League Championships, 7 Prep Bowl
Championships, 4 District Titles, 6 Regional Titles, one Semifinal appearance
(1993), 2 State Runner-Up spots (2001, 2004) and
3 State Championships (1994, 1999, 2000). His record now stands at 142 wins and 34 losses. He is the all-time winningest football coach at St. Mary's Preparatory.
