St. Mary's to Open Season at Oxford

ORCHARD LAKE--The 2005 Varsity Football Eaglets begin their drive to another Division 2 State Final at Ford Field when they visit the Oxford Wildcats on 7 pm Friday evening, August 26. The Eaglets have the honor of helping open the Wildcats' new football stadium in the inaugural meeting between the two schools. Oxford , annually a powerhouse in the tough Flint Metro League, has the reputation of being a difficult early-season opponent. Just ask Farmington Hills Harrison. The year the Drew Stanton-led Hawks won the Division 1 State Title, they lost their first and only game to Oxford . Both the Eaglets and the Wildcats like to emphasize the offensive ground game and a hard-hitting defense. The Eaglets will be led by senior captains Nick Koenigsknecht, Dominic Knight, Matt Brimer, and junior captain Dionte Allen.
The Eaglets' 2005 schedule is loaded with heavyweights. In addition to Oxford, the lineup of teams is a "who's who" in Michigan High School football.  Long-time archrival
Detroit Country Day has been to the playoffs 15 times. Catholic League rivals Birmingham Brother Rice (17) and Detroit Catholic Central (16) are annual contenders. Dearborn Divine Child (7), Warren De La Salle (4) and Detroit U of D Jesuit (3) round out what many consider the toughest league in the state. Not to be left out, non-league opponent Davison has made the playoffs on 7 occasions.
Since 1950, the Eaglets boast the 23 rd best overall win-loss percentage in the state (.698) with 311 victories against 134 losses and 3 ties. In 12 playoff appearances, St. Mary's has won 30 of 38 playoff games for a win-loss percentage of .789 with 4 state titles and 2 state runners-up.
