Area makes mark on Class A all-state football team

BY DAN STICKRADT OF THE OBSERVER AND ECCENTRIC

Oakland County entered the 2006 football season with a higher number than usual of bonafide Division I college prospects.

Many of those rising stars exit the campaign with all-state accolades.

In the Associated Press' Class A All-State Team released over the weekend, five area standouts made the first team, one area coach was selected as coach of the year, another player received special mention and five others received honorable mention bids.

Lake Orion was ranked No. 1 for eight weeks this season and finished 10-1 behind the arm of junior quarterback Chris Lum, one of two signal-callers named to the first team. The other was Lowell senior Keith Nichol, who was named Player of the Year in Class A.

Mark Dell of state runner-up Farmington Hills Harrison (Division 3) was one of three receivers named to the squad.

Birmingham Brother Rice, an Elite Eight team in Division 2, had a couple of first team nods. Darris Sawtelle, headed to Tennesee, is one of six defensive linemen on the sqaud, while Chris Colasanti (Penn State) is one of four linebackers on the first team.

Defensive back Dionte Allen of Orchard Lake St. Mary's made the first-team cut and is headed to Florida State.

Brother Rice veteran coach Al Fracassa was named the state's top coach for Class A schools, which took up the playoffs spots in D-1, D-2 and D-3.

Lake Orion lineman Josh Allison, headed to Minnesota, received special mention, the only area player on that list.

Five area standouts also made honorable mention in Class A. Among that group include St. Mary's Alex Delisi, Harrison's Ben Bojcic, Oxford's Zach Line, Brother Rice's Kaunda Hancock and Walled Lake Central's Kevin Long.
