Eaglets capitalize early, top Detroit King

by Jacob Leonhardt of Spinal Column Newsweekly

Although St. Mary's gave up two big kickoff returns for touchdowns to Detroit King, the Eaglets had no trouble dispatching King, winning 34-18, on Saturday, Aug. 26.

King gave St. Mary's early opportunities in the game, committing five turnovers. The Eaglets capitalized on the turnovers, taking a 14-0 lead nine minutes into the contest.

On the ground, St. Mary's Head Coach George Porritt said Dominique White ran well and finished with 14 carries.

"I thought our offensive line opened up holes well for us," Porritt said. "Dominique broke tackles throughout the game, which was really good."

Porritt said the Eaglets' special teams and offensive consistency need some attention.

"Our special teams have got to get better," he said.

While pleased that his defense didn't give up a touchdown, Porritt said he wants to see improvement in the aerial, offensive game.

"Our passing game was not efficient," Porritt said.

Blair Hollis scored two times, finishing with 62 yards.

Quarterback Justin Siller scampered for 45 yards and two touchdowns.

St. Mary's dominated early on in the game. Hollis scored first on a 13-yard touchdown run. For their next score, Siller came up with a 51-yard drive, which led to a 9-yard touchdown run with less than three minutes left in the first quarter. Dionte Allen returned an interception to the 19-yard line, but St. Mary's missed a field goal. King was unable to get a first down on their next possession, and St. Mary's got the ball back and White scored on a 48-yard run to give the Eaglets a 21-0 lead.

With 26 seconds to play in the first half, Laurence Treadway intercepted a pass and returned it 80 yards. Siller then scampered 20 yards for a touchdown to give St. Mary's a 28-6 lead.

Hollis then scored on a 12-yard touchdown run in the second half for a 34-12 lead.

Looking ahead to Grand Ledge this week, a team that won a state championship in 2001, a good test awaits the Eaglets on the road.

"We have never played them before," Porritt said. "They have a quality program with quality kids."

St. Mary's plays Grand Ledge on Friday, Sept. 1, at 7:30 p.m.
