ORCHARD LAKE--Orchard Lake St. Mary's began a challenging non-league schedule in strong fashion Saturday, defeating Detroit King, 34-18.

With a re-built offensive line and new starting running backs, St. Mary's moved the ball well on the ground and played strong defense, forcing five turnovers.

The visiting Crusaders, meanwhile, arrived almost an hour late, due to transportation troubles. They continued to have trouble moving forward against the Eaglets' first team defense, which did not allow a point.

The main blemish in St. Mary's game was its kickoff return team, as King scored on a pair of 95-yard returns.

St. Mary's scored five rushing TD's, including three from its new starters. Senior Blair Hollis, a defensive end standout last season, is doing double-duty at fullback this year. He opened the scoring with a 13-yard TD – his first-ever high school score – and crossed the goal line from 12 yards out in the fourth quarter.

Junior tailback Dominique White, who saw action as the number three runner last season, scored on a 48-yard, tackle-breaking run early in the second quarter that put the Eaglets on top, 21-0.

Senior quarterback Justin Siller also contributed to the ground attack. The recent Purdue commitment scored on runs of nine and 21 yards.

After White's score, King's Darrin Williams ran the kickoff back 95 yards, cutting the score to 21-6 after a missed extra point. King began its next possession at its one-yard line, following a 49-yard Andrew Jones punt. But the Crusaders drove to the Eaglets' three in the final minute of the half, giving King a chance to enter halftime just one score behind. On third and goal from the three, King quarterback Jarrel Noland – under pressure by Hollis – lobbed a pass that was intercepted at the goal line by senior linebacker Laurence Treadway. Treadway raced to the King 21 with 32 seconds left in the half. Siller scored on the next play, sending the Eaglets into the locker room with a 28-6 lead following Sean Graham's fourth extra point.

King's Donovan Dickerson opened the second half with a 95-yard kickoff return. But the Eaglets responded with a 66-yard scoring drive, capped by Hollis' second TD.

St. Mary's visits Grand Ledge Friday.
