LATHRUP VILLAGE--The anticipation, the hype, the build-up ... well, not quite.
In a match-up of Catholic League powerhouses, Birmingham Brother Rice held on for a 14-7 win over Orchard Lake St. Mary's at Southfield-Lathrup on Saturday night.
St. Mary's senior quarterback Justin Siller opened the scoring in the second quarter on a four-yard keeper. Rice (5-0) answered with less than two minutes remaining before halftime, as senior quarterback Mike Cappetto hooked up with wideout Kaunda Hancock on a 55-yard touchdown. Cappetto finished the game 12-for-16 passing for 182 yards.
The game was even until running back Ray Caulton (20 carries, 69 yards) scored with 7:12 left. St. Mary's (4-1) had a shot to tie but came up short. Rice's Hancock picked off a Siller pass with six seconds left. Siller was 5-for-19, with 93 yards passing, and rushed for 49 yards on 12 carries and a score.
