Shamrocks fall to Eaglets again

BY JEFF THEISEN OF THE NOVI NEWS

A better battle, but the same result. Catholic Central played Orchard Lake St. Mary's for the second time and lost by the same score, 28-7 Saturday at Ford Field.

"We played them a lot tougher," Shamrock head coach Tom Mach said. "I thought they played with a resolve to win. They played a very good football team that has a great deal of talent."

While the score was the same, the play was much different.

The Eaglets (7-2) scored 21-unanswered points to finish the first game.

This time, the Shamrocks trailed 14-0 at the half, but they pulled within 14-7 when Jarred Morris scored on an 11-yard pass from Chris Cagle with 2:09 left in the third quarter. The drive started with a blocked field goal by Shane Morris.

St. Mary's went back in front by 14 on a short run with 9:54 left to play, but the Shamrocks didn't quit.

Catholic Central (4-5) was deep in Eaglets territory late when a pass was picked off around the five and returned the distance with just 1:54 left to play.

The Shamrocks also had a touchdown pass called back that would have pulled the game within seven points with more than three minutes to go.

"It was a big, gigantic play," Mach said of the touchdown getting called back. "We had come within a touchdown and we would've had great momentum.

"I though we played a real tough second half. We kind of just went at them and held the ball for periods of time and kept their offense off the field."

Joe Kinville led the Shamrock rushing attack with 54 yards on 14 carries. Cagle completed 5-of-13 passes for 48 yards, a score and one interception. Dave Galiyas led the defense with four unassisted tackles and nine assists.

The loss ends the Shamrocks' hopes for making the playoffs. Mach said it's always tough to end a season, but that's life.

"Sometimes you work your best and you still don't win," Mach said. "You don't always get rewarded for a lot of hard work, but you've still got to stay in there and keep trying. I hope that they continue that kind of a philosophy throughout life.

"I was proud of them the way they hung in there. The teams that we played could all win state championships that we got beat by."
