Sidelines: Sherrell is a Lion
THE WEST BLOOMFIELD ECCENTRIC
Former Orchard Lake St. Mary's All-State running back Anthony Sherrell became the third Eaglet to reach the NFL this season when he was signed to the Lions' practice squad last week.
Sherrell joins tight end Charles Davis, who's on the New York Giants' practice squad, and Josh Bourke, who was injured before the season but remains on Green Bay's injured reserve list. None of the three has played a regular-season NFL contest.
A fourth Eaglet, David Bowens of the Miami Dolphins, is in his eighth NFL campaign.
Sherrell played two varsity seasons with St. Mary's, in 1999 and 2000, and helped the Eaglets win state titles both years. A 2000 All-State choice, he set a school record with 1,706 rushing yards. After red-shirting at Eastern Michigan in 2001, Sherrell played four seasons at EMU, appearing in 33 games and gaining 2,888 yards on 635 carries. He scored 26 rushing touchdowns and two receiving TDs.
