St. Mary's wins playoff football opener

BY MIKE ROSENBAUM OF THE OBSERVER AND ECCENTRIC

Orchard Lake St. Mary's opened Division 2 playoff competition Saturday with a 34-0 victory over White Lake Lakeland.

The game was played in rainy and windy conditions that turned St. Mary's home field into a muddy, slippy mess. Nevertheless, the Eaglets took good care of the football. While Lakeland lost five fumbles, St. Mary's did not turn the ball over once.

Quarterback Justin Siller ran for touchdowns of six and 10 yards and threw a 34-yard scoring pass to Taurian Washington . Blair Hollis opened the scoring with a two-yard TD run and Ben Caplinger closed the scoring on a one-yard run. Senior linebacker Laurence Treadway led the defense with 10 tackles.

St. Mary's led 14-0 at halftime, then scored three times in the third quarter, with each score set up by a fumble recovery.

Lakeland finished the season 6-4. St. Mary's improved to 8-2. The Eaglets will play host to Walled Lake Central in a district final Saturday at 1 p.m.
