Dion Sims, one of the state's top high school athletes, transferred to Orchard Lake St. Mary's from U-D Jesuit this week and will not be eligible until next year, his junior season.
Sims, a 6-foot-5, 230-pounder, played receiver, quarterback and linebacker for U-D coach Scott Merchant this season. Sims also played basketball.
According to Michigan High School Athletic Association rules, Sims would have been immediately eligible for St. Mary's.
But, he would not been eligible to participate in the state playoffs. He would have been eligible to participate in basketball starting in December.
But, according to the Catholic League, Sims would have had to transfer last week, before the end of the fourth Friday of the semester, to be eligible to compete next semester.
"We implemented the rule a few years back," Catholic League director Vic Michaels said.
"We talked to the people at St. Mary's at the time and they were cooperative. Our rules are tougher than the MHSAA and we wanted it that way."
Said U-D athletic director R.J. Lomas: "We wish the best for Dion."
