NOVI -- Detroit Catholic Central has been waiting for a day like this for three years. For three years, Catholic Central has been in Novi since leaving its home in Redford and the Shamrocks had yet to have a signature win, a victory over a top-ranked team.
Catholic Central earned that victory Sunday and, because of it, threw the Central Division race of the Catholic League up for grabs.
CC came back from a 10-0 deficit and upset No. 13 Orchard Lake St. Mary's, 21-10, in the 63rd annual Boys Bowl Game at Catholic Central.
Ryan Houska's 40-yard touchdown pass to Scott Kovanda with 3:36 left in the third quarter gave CC a 14-10 lead and Joe Kinville's 18-yard interception return for a touchdown with 9:45 to play put St. Mary's away.
"I visualize that (interception) every night," Kinville said. "Paul Kanaan tipped it and it was just a duck ready to be picked off.
"The past three years we haven't beaten a team we shouldn't have until today. We forgot to win for awhile."
CC (4-2) is 1-2 in the division after two tough losses.
Two weeks ago, CC lost to Birmingham Brother Rice (4-2, 2-1), 12-7, and last week it lost to Warren DeLaSalle (6-0, 3-0), 21-14 in overtime.
DeLaSalle plays Brother Rice on Saturday at Southfield-Lathrup then finishes its league season at St. Mary's (4-1, 2-1) on Oct. 13.
St. Mary's took a 10-0 lead on Sean Graham's 24-yard field goal late in the first quarter and on a 3-yard touchdown run by Dominique White (16 carries, 69 yards) with 4:05 left in the half.
Cory Amble's 24-yard touchdown run with 1:18 remaining cut St. Mary's lead to 10-7.
"We got whopped in the trenches," St. Mary's coach George Porritt said. "That was the difference. We couldn't get the running game going. We played well in the first half and then they shut us down."
