Predicted order of finish (coaches)
CENTRAL DIVISION
Birmingham Brother Rice: The Warriors (11-1) won the league title and return three starters on offense, five on defense. Coach Al Fracassa likes what he's seen in senior QB Andy Lentz. Lentz has WR Ronald Dorsey-Austin and T Alex Dolman back. The play of RB Caulton Ray will be important. Defensively, the Warriors will be strong. Mazen Jaddou and Paul Gyarmati return at linebacker, and Nick Thomas is back in the secondary. Kyle Ramfoes and Jim Plaskey have experience on the defensive line.
Warren DeLaSalle: The Pilots (11-3) came within a play of winning their first state title and return six starters on defense, four on offense. The Pilots have a favorable schedule and will be led by three seniors -- TE David Blackburn, LB/FB Kyle Torzy and RB/DB Chad O'Shell. The linebackers are solid with Todd Culling and Fred Elias. Scott MacLeod will move from center to offensive tackle. The Martinez twins, sophomores John and Jim, will play receiver and defensive back. Juniors Josh Sinagoga and Alex Pierce will vie for the quarterback spot.
Orchard Lake St. Mary's: The Eaglets (8-3) return four starters on both sides. WR/LB Dion Sims is a transfer. The defensive line will be formidable with the return of DE/TE Jason Semmes, DE/G Matt Sargent and DT Carl Goeckel. G Mike Bauer will be one of the lead blockers for another returning starter, RB Dominique White. The leading quarterback candidates are Brad Thomas and Robert Bolden. Kris Morris, the backup quarterback, will switch to receiver after experiencing arm difficulty this summer.
Detroit Catholic Central: The Shamrocks (4-5) have one of the state's top players in NT/OL Mike Martin. Ryan Houska will move from defensive back to quarterback. Junior Steve Harding, DE Shane Morris and DB Cory Amble will get their share of carries. LB/FB Joe Kinzille will be used mainly as a blocking back. WR/DB Kam Leiter is one of the top juniors. LB Chris Fischer will call the defensive signals and DB/WR Scott Kovanda is dependable.
U-D Jesuit: The Cubs (4-5) have a new coach in Paul Windham and return seven starters. The best is George Winn, one of the top running backs in the league. DE/OTs Jeremy Bass and Hosea Cunningham have the stamina it takes to go both ways and play at a high level. Sophomore QB Devin Gardner is a star on the rise, and junior DB/SB Michael Joyner-Hill is a captain. LBs Dan Bruner and Steve Reaume, and DB Allen Harris will play as receivers from time to time.
Dearborn Divine Child: The Falcons (4-5) have 10 seniors, seven with varsity experience. There's promise from the underclassmen, particularly quarterback, where sophomore Marty Mitchell did start last season. Juniors Sean Heiss and Rudy Fiscelli are back on the defensive line and Anthony Vella, another junior, returns at guard. C/NT Mike Hinkle and OT Darren Shelton need to lead. DBs Eric Nagle and Matt McWilliams are sure-handed receivers.
