DIVISION 3 NOTEBOOK: Five-overtime battle sets numerous records
By ANTHONY FENECH/Special to The Detroit Free Press
• East Grand Rapids senior Michael Wilson helped keep Orchard Lake St. Mary's off the scoreboard with 290 yards punting -- 41.4 yards per kick.
• Wilson also just missed passing the state record for the longest field goal (46 yards). With less than two minutes left in the first half, Wilson's 47-yard attempt fell short.
• The five-overtime battle was the longest game in the history of the Michigan High School Athletic Association's playoffs. Ten times a fourth overtime was needed. This was the ninth finals OT game all-time, and the second for East Grand Rapids. Four of the nine finals games went to double OT, which, before Saturday, was the farthest a finals game had ever gone.
