ORCHARD LAKE--Orchard Lake St. Mary's quieted a lot of skeptics with its impressive 40-21 crunching of Catholic League rival Birmingham Brother Rice Saturday afternoon.
The undefeated Eaglets torched a Warrior defense that had allowed just 21 points – including a pair of shutouts – in their previous four games. Undefeated (4-0) St. Mary's also dealt Brother Rice (3-2) its first league loss of the season.
St. Mary's scored all 40 of its points in the first three quarters, and outgained Brother Rice in total yards by a whopping 376-170. The Warriors managed just 34 yards rushing while St. Mary's countered with 281 ground yards.
The Eaglets, who are averaging 38 points per game, scored first on a 27-yard passing play from sophomore quarterback Robert Bolden to junior wide receiver Dion Sims. Brother Rice tied the game 7-all late in the first quarter when defender Mazen Jaddou returned a fumble 43 yards.
St. Mary's went up 13-7 on a 19-yard run by Dominique White (kick failed). Rice then took its only lead of the game, 14-13, a few minutes later when senior running back Caulton Ray raced in from nine yards out. However, the lead was short-lived as St. Mary's scored with 49 seconds remaining in the second quarter on a 25-yard pass from Bolden to Demetrius Jackson.
The host Eaglets put the game away with 21 unanswered third-quarter points. White scored on a 28-yard run and junior Sam Fioroni scored on a 42-yard run. In between, Suave Lavallis returned a punt for a TD that covered 72 yards.
Rice's Mark Makoski netted the game's final touchdown when he hooked up with quarterback Frankie Popp on a 25-yard scoring play.
St. Mary's, which had 21 first downs to Rice's eight, was led offensively by White who finished with 116 yards gained on 17 carries. Justin Semmes had 85 yards rushing and Fioroni had 66 yards in just five carries. Bolden completed seven of eight passes for 95 yards. Sims had four receptions totaling 48 yards.
Popp completed 14 of 23 passes for 136 yards. Ron Dorsey-Austin had eight receptions for 82 yards.
Defensively, Semmes and Gary Hunter were each credited with four tackles, including one sack for St. Mary's. Lavallis had an interception and Josh Abbott had a sack.
For Rice, Kyle Ramfos had eight tackles and Steve Carlson added seven.
