FIVE AND OUT
Eaglets' chance at fifth state title ends in 5OT loss to Pioneers
DETROIT (AP)--Joe Glendening scored four rushing touchdowns, including two in overtime, as East Grand Rapids won their second straight Division 3 title with a 46-39 win over Orchard Lake St. Mary's Saturday at Ford Field.
The game, which required five overtimes, was the longest in Michigan postseason history. No finals game had gone more than two extra sessions, and no playoff game had gone beyond four.
After both teams kicked field goals in the first overtime, Dominique White took a fourth-down pitch from Robert Bolden and scored around left end. After a three-yard loss, East Grand Rapids quarterback Calvin Blair hit his younger brother, Christopher, for a 13-yard touchdown, and Wilson made the tying extra point.
On the first play of the third session, Calvin Blair three another touchdown pass, this one to Zach Flood for a 31-24 lead.
A defensive holding call negated a Pioneers sack on third down, and White scored from the 3 on the next play, sending the game to a fourth period.
Bolden dove in from one yard on fourth down, and the Eaglets ran a fake on the extra point, with holder Kris Morris throwing a 2-point pass to Dion Sims for a 39-31 lead.
East Grand Rapids also faced fourth-and-goal from the one, and Glendening scored his third touchdown of the game. The Blair brothers then teamed up for the tying two-point conversion.
Glendening tied a finals record with a fourth rushing touchdown, making it 46-39 in the fifth overtime, then made a key tackle on a second-down screen pass at the 8.
Bolden threw an incomplete pass on third down, and his desperate fourth-down pass to Tayler Peruski was broken up by Evan Ankney to end the marathon.
The Eaglets drove 65 yards on their first possession, taking a 7-0 lead on White's 15-yard run, but Glendening went 68 yards up the middle to tie the game with 39 seconds left in the first half.
Glendening gave the Pioneers a 14-7 lead with a nine-yard touchdown on their first possession of the third quarter. But Sam Fioroni's eight-yard run on the ensuing possession tied the game at 14, and both defenses held through the fourth quarter.
