OL St. Mary's controls Brother Rice
BY CHRIS LAU/DETROIT FREE PRESS
ORCHARD LAKE-- In the first quarter Saturday, when he was wrapped up behind the line of scrimmage, Orchard Lake St. Mary's quarterback Robert Bolden was holding the ball with one hand. He fumbled as he was being dragged down, and Birmingham Brother Rice returned the ball 43 yards for a touchdown.
When he returned to the sideline, his coach George Porritt offered some advice.
"He told me, 'Always keep four-point pressure, always keep your hand on the ball,' " Bolden said.
And teammate Dominique White gave encouragement.
"I told him to forget about it, to go to the next play," White said. "I told him to hold onto the ball and it'll be OK."
The rest of the way, Bolden threw effectively, ran fearlessly and guided the Eaglets to a 40-21 homecoming victory.
After Mazen Jaddou returned Bolden's fumble (Jaddou's second straight week with a defensive touchdown) and Caulton Ray ran for a touchdown to give Brother Rice a 14-13 lead, St. Mary's scored the next 27 points.
The Eaglets took control after Bolden's 26-yard touchdown to Demetrius Jackson 49 seconds before halftime that gave them a 19-14 lead.
"When he hit that fade route, he got going," Porritt said.
The Eaglets (4-0, 2-0 Catholic League Central) scored 21 points on the third quarter, with a 28-yard run by White (his ninth touchdown this season), a 72-yard punt return by Suave LaVallis and a 42-yard run by Sam Fioroni.
Bolden's efficient handling of the option play resulted in two touchdown passes, several rushes for big gains, including White's third quarter TD.
"He ran well and was the leader of that team," Brother Rice's coach Al Fracassa said. "A few of those running backs were pretty darn good, too."
Fracassa was referring to White (16 carries, 109 yards, two touchdowns), Fioroni (five carries, 67 yards, one touchdown) and Justin Semmes (15 carries, 76 yards).
Brother Rice (3-2, 1-1) were led by Ron Dorsey-Austin (six catches, 90 yards), Ray (12 carries, 42 yards, one touchdown) and Mark Makoski (two catches, 39 yards, one touchdown).
