Rice turns the tables, tops Eaglets for Catholic crown
The West Bloomfield Eccentric

Catholic League rivals Orchard Lake St. Mary's and Birmingham Brother Rice generally play close, low-scoring football games. This year, however, was an exception. St. Mary's trounced the Warriors in the regular season, 40-21, but the Warriors avenged the defeat in a big way in last Saturday's Catholic League A-B Division championship game, crushing the Eaglets, 45-14.

Rice finished the regular season 7-2 overall while St. Mary's dropped to 6-2. Both squads were 4-1 in Central Division play.

The Warriors opened the scoring when Caulton Ray capped a 74-yard drive with a seven-yard touchdown run. Ryan Kelly added the first of his six extra points for a 7-0 lead. Rice's defense then made the first of its five fourth-down stops, at its 42-yard line, to end St. Mary's first possession. The Warriors capitalized quickly as Andy Lentz threw a 23-yard TD pass to Ron Dorsey Austin.

St. Mary's tied the game in the second quarter as Robert Bolden threw a 45-yard touchdown pass to Dion Sims, then Dominique White capped a 23-yard drive Ð set up by a Donald Coleman fumble recovery Ð with a one-yard run. Sean Graham booted both extra points.

Rice then took charge with two more scores before halftime, on a 17-yard TD pass from Lentz to Mark Makoski and a two-yard run by Ray.

In the fourth quarter, Kelly booted a 26-yard field goal, Mazen Jaddou scored on a two-yard run and Danny Henneghan capped the scoring for Rice on a 30-yard interception return.

Ray ran 23 times for 156 yards. Lentz completed 11 of 16 passes for 137 yards with Dorsey-Austin grabbing seven for 100 yards. For St. Mary's, White gained 41 yards on 13 carries, Bolden completed five of 11 passes for 96 yards and Sims caught three passes for 77 yards.

Rice's offense "did a good job on checkoffs on certain things we were trying to do defensively," said St. Mary's coach George Porritt. "I don't think we executed well offensively."

The Warriors open Division 2 state playoff action Saturday against visiting Rochester Stoney Creek.

The winner will meet either Warren DeLaSalle Ð which Rice beat 17-7 on Oct. 6 Ð or Rochester Adams.

St. Mary's plays host to Detroit Renaissance Saturday in Division 3 action. The winner of that contest will face the winner of Friday's St. Clair-Warren Woods Tower game
