Former St. Mary's star Anthony Sherrell breaks loose on his way to a 110-yard effort for the Frankfurt Galaxy in their NFL Europe opener against Amsterdam, earlier this month. Sherrell is second in the league in rushing after two games.

Former Orchard Lake St. Mary's running back Anthony Sherrell was named the NFL Europe Offensive Player of the Week after helping the Frankfurt Galaxy defeat the Cologne Centurions, 18-13, on April 21.

One of the Galaxy's brightest stars this season, Sherrell ran 14 times for 57 yards and caught six passes for 45 yards against Cologne, for a total of 102 yards of offense.

Through the opening two weeks of NFL Europe action, Sherrell leads the league with 229 total yards from scrimmage. He ranks second in the league with 167 rushing yards on 31 carries and has added eight receptions for 62 yards for the Galaxy, who began the season 2-0. Sherrell has also returned one kickoff for 23 yards.

After concluding his college career at Eastern Michigan University, Sherrell signed with the Lions as a free agent last year, joining Detroit's practice squad on Oct. 11, where he remained for nine weeks. He was signed to the active roster Dec. 12, waived Dec. 19, then re-signed Jan. 2. The Lions allocated Sherrell to NFL Europe, where he was selected by the Galaxy in the seventh round of the NFL Allocated Player Draft.

Two other St. Mary's grads are also playing in NFL Europe. Defensive back Grant Mason, who played college football at Stanford and Michigan, plays for the Amsterdam Admirals, while tight end Charles Davis, from Purdue, plays for the Berlin Thunder. Through two games, Mason had six tackles, including five solo stops, while Davis had caught four passes for 16 yards.

Mason signed as an undrafted free agent by New Orleans last year, but was released on Sept. 1. He was signed by Pittsburgh on Jan. 12. Davis was drafted by the Steelers last April but released on Sept. 2. He spent time on the practice squads of the New York Giants and Carolina, then was re-signed by the Giants Feb. 13.
