White scores 4 TDs to lead OLSM
Eaglet defense stifles Cass Tech's offense in blowout win
By ED MEYERS/Special to The Oakland Press
ORCHARD LAKE--Senior running back Dominique White made Orchard Lake St. Mary's fans forget about last year's district loss, as he scored four touchdowns in an easy 28-6 triumph over Detroit Cass Tech Saturday afternoon.
The 5-foot-9, 183-pound White tallied scores in each of the four quarters while OLSM (1-0) held Cass Tech to just 38 yards rushing and 45 yards passing in the game. The Technicians (0-1) were hampered at quarterback due to the loss of starter Anthony Anchrum, who suffered an ankle injury in practice earlier in the week.
It was win No. 162 for longtime OLSM coach George Porritt, now in his 19th season. He has suffered just 38 losses in his career.
"I was very pleased witht the running of White," Porritt said afterwards. "He's one of our senior leaders and should do well. Our quarterback, Robert Bolden, making his first start there, made some mental mistakes, but did well otherwise."
He pointed out, however, "We're not that good and needed a second game next week."
OLSM has an open date and has to travel to Toledo in two weeks for a game.
"Nobody in Michigan wants to play us," he said.
Porritt had praise for his defense, singling out Donald Coleman and Carl Goeckel. Coleman had a nice tackle of Cass Tech's signal-caller early in the contest, causing a loss of 7 yards back to the 10-yard line.
St. Mary's scored its first touchdown with just 1:59 left in the opening quarter of play, as White went 27 yards to complete a 40-yard drive the second time the Eaglets had the football. Senior Sean Graham booted the first of his four PATs for a 7-0 lead.
White, who had 84 total yards rushing and receiving combined, got his second score with 4:17 left before intermission, this one on a 40-yard reception from Bolden. Graham's kick made it 14-6 at halftime.
The third OLSM touchdown came following a 33-yard pass from Bolden to Demetrius Jackson, putting the ball on Cass Tech's 1-yard line with 1:48 left in the third quarter.
White took it in after Bolden was stopped on a quarterback sneak.
The final Eaglet touchdown came with just 3:48 left to play. Following a punt, OLSM took over the ball at the Cass Tech 40.
Junior running back Justin Semmes broke loose on the first play from scrimmage and went all the way tot he 15-yard line for a 25-yard gain.
White then went around right end for his fourth tally of the afternoon and Graham's toe completed the scoring.
Cass Tech's lone touchdown came in the second period with just 21 seconds left as Cortez Smith went five yards to finish a 65-yard drive to make the score 14-6 at the time, the closest the visitors got.
Matt Sargent blocked the PAT attempt.
