Eaglets rebound from loss, shut out Detroit Jesuit

By MICHAEL SHELTON - Spinal Column Newsweekly

FERNDALE-- After a devastating loss in its state final rematch a week ago, St. Mary's returned to championship form on Friday, Sept. 5 with 42-0 thrashing of Detroit Jesuit at Ferndale.

"I think it was big because we didn't play well the first game," said St. Mary's Coach George Porritt. "I told them there are no shortcuts and that the only way is to bounce back and take it one game at a time."

It was just the remedy the Eaglets (1-1, 1-0 in the Catholic League Central) needed after the tough loss at East Grand Rapids , the defending Division 3 state champions.

The Eaglets relied mostly on their rushing attack, gaining 218 yards on the ground compared to Jesuit's 15 yards. The Eaglets scored all their points in the first half.

St. Mary's only passed for 49 yards while the Cubs (1-1, 0-1) had 128 yards through the air.

Justin Semmes scored the Eaglets' first two touchdowns, both on 1-yard runs, and finished with 48 yards. Sam Fioroni also scored two touchdowns on 1-yard and 6-yard runs.

Thomas Pellorito (1-yard run) and Suave Lavallis (5-yard run) also had a touchdown run each.

On defense, Joe Murphy led the charge for St. Mary's with three tackles. Evan Webster had 2.5 total tackles and four players each had two tackles.

In fact, 24 Eaglets either had a tackle or at least assisted on one.

St. Mary's will play its first home game of the season on Saturday, Sept. 13, as the Eaglets welcome Flint Southwestern Academy for the first-ever meeting between the two teams.

"On our line play, we still missed blocks and we have to tackle better and continue to run the ball," Porritt said. "We still have a long way to go, but we're looking forward to the coming week."
