By MICHAEL SHELTON - Spinal Column Newsweekly
ORCHARD LAKE--St. Mary's kept its state playoff hopes alive last week and clinched a Catholic League playoff berth in the process.
The Eaglets trounced Dearborn Divine Child, 45-7, on Saturday, Oct. 11 to move to 4-3 overall and 3-2 in the Catholic League Central, while Divine Child fell to 4-3 and 1-1.
With the win, St. Mary's also clinched a spot in the Catholic League Wild Card game at Ford Field in Detroit on Saturday, Oct. 25 , where they will face Birmingham Brother Rice for the second time this season.
"We executed well on both sides of the ball," said St. Mary's Head Coach George Porritt. "We know we have to run the ball well this time of year."
It was an all-around team effort for the Eaglets as they rushed for 306 yards and five different players scored touchdowns in their sixth straight win over Divine Child.
Tayler Peruski led St. Mary's with 85 yards rushing, including a 69-yard touchdown run; while Kevonta Williams had 80 yards rushing.
Pierce Niemiec (1-yard run), Robert Bolden (5-yard run), and Sam Fioroni (35-yard run) each scored a touchdown for the Eaglets.
Bolden's only pass of the day was a 9-yard touchdown strike to Mike Padula.
Keegan Dupack also hit a 27-yard field goal and was perfect on all six extra point attempts.
On defense, Peruski scored on a 26-yard interception return in the second quarter, while Scott Koenigsknecht led the Eaglets with five total tackles.
Gary Hunter, Shane Halaas, Justin Ruby and Suave Lavallis each had three total tackles.
The Eaglets will next take on Davison (4-3) on the road Friday, Oct. 17.
"Davison is battling for the playoffs, as well," Porritt said. "We just have to do the simple things and not turn the ball over."
