St. Mary's cashes in on turnovers to grab 35-0 victory

By MICHAEL SHELTON -- Spinal Column Newsweekly

ORCHARD LAKE - St. Mary's welcomed Flint Southwestern Academy for their first-ever meeting on Saturday, Sept. 13, and were very brusque hosts: The Eaglets shut out Southwestern 35-0 in a final tune-up before a tough stretch in their Catholic League schedule.

"We made dividends on their turnovers," said St. Mary's Coach George Porritt. "I expected a tougher contest, but the weather was really bad."

The Eaglets (2-1) had 268 yards of total offense, including 263 yards rushing; compared to 68 for Southwestern.

Sam Fioroni had a field day for St. Mary's, scoring three consecutive touchdowns on runs of 4, 3 and 42 yards. He finished with 94 yards rushing, followed by Justin Semmes with 64 yards and a 2-yard touchdown run, as St. Mary's kept their offense on the ground.

The Eaglets' defense also made its presence felt, forcing six Southwestern fumbles and recovering four of them.

Pierce Niemiec scored the game's first touchdown early in the first quarter on a 15-yard fumble recovery.

Shane Halaas, Scott Koenigknecht and James Huddleston each had three tackles for St. Mary's.

Next up for the Eaglets is a trip to Warren De La Salle on Friday, Sept. 19 to take on the undefeated Pilots in a Catholic League Central Division matchup.

"We have a lot to improve on before that game; we have to block and tackle better," Porritt said.

Following that contest are games against Birmingham Brother Rice, Detroit Catholic Central and Dearborn Divine Child.
