St. Mary's ends skid with victory over Brother Rice
By MICHAEL SHELTON - Spinal Column Newsweekly
LATHRUP VILLAGE--
The Eaglets ended a two-game losing streak against the rival Warriors and climbed back into the Catholic League title race with a 31-28 win over Brother Rice last week.
"This win was very important; we had to have this," said St. Mary's Coach George Porritt. "Brother Rice is an outstanding team and our kids played well."
Sam Fioroni led the way with two touchdowns and 158 yards rushing for St. Mary's (3-2 overall, 2-1 in the Catholic League Central)
Quarterback Robert Bolden scored the game-winning touchdown on a 1-yard run in the fourth quarter and also converted on a fourth-down run that allowed the Eaglets to run out the clock.
The Warriors fell to 3-2 and 1-1 in the Central division.
St. Mary's will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 4 in its annual homecoming game. This year's opponent is none other than Detroit Catholic Central, a team that knocked off the Eaglets 21-10 last season.
"They're a well-coached, physical team and we can't turn the ball over against them," Porritt said. "We have to seal our own fate."
