St. Mary's misses playoff berth with loss to Davison

By MICHAEL SHELTON -- Spinal Column Newsweekly

DAVISON - There will be no return to the state playoffs this season for St. Mary's, last year's Division 3 state runner-up.

William Nicolai knocked the Eaglets out of contention with a 32-yard field goal as time expired to give Davison a 22-20 victory on Friday, Oct. 17.

St. Mary's fell to 4-4 on the season with one game left, short of the six wins needed to qualify' while Davison moved to 5-3 on the season to keep its playoff hopes alive.

As for the Eaglets, one season after falling in five overtimes to East Grand Rapids in the Division 3 state final, they must now deal with the disappointment of missing the state tournament.

The Eaglets' lone consolation will be that they will play their final game of the season at Ford Field in Detroit on Saturday, Oct. 25 against Birmingham Brother Rice in the Catholic League Wild Card game.

St. Mary's knocked off the Warriors back on Sept. 27, winning 31-28.

Before Davison's game-winning field goal, Robert Bolden found Tayler Peruski for a 26-yard touchdown pass, but the Eaglets couldn't make the two-point conversion and was holding onto a 20-19 lead.

St. Mary's answered a 33-yard field goal by Nicolai in the first quarter with a 17-yard touchdown run by Rodney Woodland in the second quarter for a 7-3 Eaglets lead.

However, Oliver Saylor would answer for Davison with a 19-yard touchdown run to set up a 10-7 halftime lead.

A 22-yard field goal by Nicolai gave Davison a six-point lead before Sam Fioroni scored on a 3-yard run 30 seconds into the fourth quarter to put the Eaglets up 14-13.

Saylor would then score again for Davison from 11 yards out and put the pressure on St. Mary's, which took the lead but saw it wither away on one kick.
