U-M football expert reveals his top 5 in-state prospects

By Vince Ellis/Detroit Free Press

So now it's the Wolverines' turn.

Last week, the U. called up our homie Jim Comparoni, who holds it down at

Spartanmag.com, to get the pulse of MSU's recruiting efforts.

Comp had some rather astute analysis, so this week we turn it over to our boy Josh Helmholdt, who keeps it real for

TheWolverine.com.

We are warning you that some names you are about to see appeared on Comp's list. But the U. thinks it's interesting to see how the two schools might have entirely different views on a particular prospect.

So here goes Helmholdt's list.

WR/TE Dion Sims, Orchard Lake St. Mary's, 6-foot-5, 230 pounds

Josh: "He's going to be a national recruit. I have no problem ranking him as a receiver, because I feel he can play WR at the college level. Some are even looking at him as a defensive end."

WR James Jackson, Grand Ledge, 6-0, 175

Josh: "Big-time target with offers from close to 20 schools. He's an ideal fit for Michigan's slot receiver role. He could be the fastest guy in the state."

WR Cameron Gordon, Inkster, 6-2, 200

Josh: "I love Cameron. He only has offers from MSU or MAC schools. I like him best as a safety, but he prefers wide receiver . He runs well and hits hard. Could have a Nick Perry-type rise."

S Jeremy Gainer, Livonia Clarenceville, 6-1, 200

Josh: "He's just had a real strong rise this spring. He's doing well in track. He's a guy that can play safety or outside linebacker. Most teams are talking OLB at this point. On film, he's an animal. He's just a little undersized.

TE Reid Fragel, Grosse Pointe South, 6-8, 240

"He has offers from OSU, MSU at tight end, but Michigan is looking at him as a tackle. I think his highest upside is at tackle in college."

So the U. would like to thank Josh and Comp for the time. Much love, guys.
