FERNDALE--Orchard Lake St. Mary's shut out U-D Jesuit, 35-0, to even its season record to 2-2 on Saturday.
Following the opening kickoff, the Cubs started out hot as QB Brian Cleary found WR Harrison Wenson for 35 yards up the center of the field. However, the Cubs could not sustain the momentum as Justin Ruby stopped Cub Stephen Degenhardt for no gain on fourth down at the St. Mary's 40-yard line.
The Eaglets then went 60 yards in 5 plays, all runs, to score as Earnest Thomas scored his first of two touchdowns from six yards out. Christopher Vucinaj added the first of five PAT's.
On the ensuing kickoff, Cub Curtis Smith's 45-yard return again put Detroit Jesuit in good field position, but the Eaglet defense rose up and forced a punt. Cub J.P Hewitt's 22-yard punt, along with a 15-yard penalty, gave the Eaglets the ball at midfield. The Eaglets, led by Gary Hunter's 22-yard run, went 52 yards in five rushing plays as Earnest Thomas scored his second rushing touchdown.
Again, the Cubs started with good field position, as Tor Vinson returned Christopher Vucinaj's kickoff 68 yards. A 15-yard face-mask penalty put the ball on the Eaglet 14-yard line. Again the Eaglet defense stood tall, and denied the Cubs, with Justin Ruby and Earnest Thomas stopping Cub David Hughes at the 18-yard line. The Eaglets drove the ball to the Cub 47-yard line before having to punt. Michael Koenigsknecht's punt was downed at the Cub 10-yard line. A sack of Cub QB Brian Cleary by David Anderson put the ball on the Cub 1-yard line, and J.P. Hewitt's punt went out-of-bounds at the Cub 30-yard line. Four runs later, Eaglet Corey Lucas took a pitch from Robert Bolden and scored from the six-yard line to put the Eaglets up by three touchdowns.
With 3:39 left in the first half, Michael Koenigsknecht intercepted Cub QB Brian Cleary's pass at the Eaglet 29-yard line. The Eaglets then went on a 14-play, 71-yard drive, using a combination of pass and run to score their fourth touchdown when QB Robert Bolden ran the ball in from the 1 with five seconds left in the first half.
After an exchange of punts in the third quarter, the Eaglets went 69 yards in seven plays to score their final touchdown on RB Enrique Pardo's 5-yard run. The highlight of the drive was an over-the-shoulder catch by WR Allen Robinson on a pass from Robert Bolden that put the Eaglets on the Cub 5-yard line.
From this point on, a running clock was in effect for the remainder of the game.
Corey Lucas led the Eaglet rushing attack with six carries for 81 yards. St. Mary's had 243 yards on 43 carries as eleven Eaglets handled the ball. The Cubs were held to 24 yards on 19 carries. Eaglet QB Robert Bolden completed 10 of 13 passes for 118 yards with no interceptions or touchdowns. Cub QB Brian Cleary completed 13 of 18 passes for 85 yards and one interception. Allen Robinson and Nick Larson each had three receptions, and Cub Curtis Smith had six.
The Eaglet defense had two sacks and nine tackles for losses.
The Eaglets visit Novi Detroit Catholic Central on Sunday, October 4, 2009, at 1 pm, for the 50th Annual Boys Bowl.
