ORCHARD LAKE--
Orchard Lake St. Mary's moved one game closer to making the state playoffs with a 31-7 victory over the Davison Cardinals on Saturday afternoon.
The Eaglets scored on their first possession when Earnest Thomas ran 11 yards with 7:35 to go in the first period.
St. Mary's made the score 14-0 following a 10-play, 75-yard drive, on QB Robert Bolden's 16-yard run. The drive was highlighted by a 21-yard pass completion from Bolden to WR Michael Furlong, and a 23-yard reverse by WR Gary Hunter.
The Eaglets got the ball back after a Cardinal first down when DT Cortez Riley recovered a Jake Thompson fumble at the Davison 32-yard line. Junior RB Corey Lucas took a pitch from QB Bolden and ran 32 yards for St. Mary's third score with 4:15 left in the second quarter.
On the ensuing drive, Cardinal RB Tyler Martin got loose and ran 64 yards through the Eaglet defense for Davison's only score. It was the longest touchdown run by an Eaglet opponent this season.
An interception and return by Eaglets FS Michael Koenigsknecht in the closing seconds of the first half led to a 24-yard field goal by Nathan Parry to make the score 24-7.
Davison surprised St. Mary's by recovering an on-side kick to start the second half, but the Eaglet defense stiffened and forced a punt. The Eaglets then went on a six-play, 55-yard drive that culminated in QB Robert Bolden's second rushing touchdown of the day with 7:19 left in the third quarter.
Midway through the final period, the Eaglet reserves moved the ball to the Cardinal 21-yard, but a field goal attempt failed with a high snap forced holder Nick Larson to run.
St. Mary's defense held Davison to five first downs, and 115 yards in total offense (66 rushing, 49 passing), recovered one fumble, intercepted two passes, had five sacks, and nine tackles for losses.
Thirteen Eaglets ran the ball 49 times for 260 yards led by QB Robert Bolden's 65 yards. Bolden also completed five of eight passes for 86 yards. Backup Michael Koenigsknecht completed one pass for 17 yards.
St. Mary's will meet Novi Detroit Catholic Central for a second time this season in the Catholic League A-B Championship game on Saturday, October 24, 2009, at 4 pm in Prep Bowl at Ford Field.
