ORCHARD LAKE -- Linebacker Earnest Thomas of Orchard Lake St. Mary's signed with Illinois on Wednesday. It ended a condensed Midwestern swing during which Thomas made official visits to three Big Ten schools in the past 10 days.
He first visited Minnesota on Jan. 23. Thomas then went to Illinois on Jan. 28 and, before coming home, to Wisconsin on Jan. 30.
Thomas, at 6-1 and 207 pounds, is undersized for a linebacker and is more suited to play inside rather than on the edge in college.
Thomas is ranked No. 13 on The Detroit News Blue Chip list and showed his versatility late in the season as coach George Porritt used him more and more as a running back . He ran for three touchdowns in a 35-21 victory over Melvindale in a Division 3 district final.
