2000--The Year in Review
Division IV State Football Champions (13-1)

OLSM 26 East Lansing 9 at Pontiac Silverdome  (1-0)

St. Mary's began their defense of the Division IV State Title with a 26-9 victory at the Silverdome. The Eaglet offense, led by senior tailback Anthony Sherrell, rushed for 349 yards and an impressive start to the new season. Sherrell had 160 yards on 12 carries and touchdown runs of 65 and 60 yards.

OLSM 26 Detroit Country Day 21 at Milewski Field  (2-0)

The Eaglets showed their heart in this classic battle for the Gridiron trophy. Sherrell again paved the way with 121 yards on 20 carries and 3 TDs (2, 13 and 12 yards). Senior Grant Mason scored on a 20-yard keeper late in the fourth quarter to win it for the Eaglets.

Detroit Catholic Central 26 OLSM 8 at Milewski Field (2-1)

The Shamrocks of Catholic Central forced eight (8) Eaglet turnovers and handed St. Mary's what would prove to be its only loss of this season. CC outgained St. Mary's (224 yards) with 337 yards in total offense.

OLSM 28 U of D Jesuit 3 at Milewski Field  (3-1)

The Eaglets returned to their winning ways and embarked on an eleven game winning streak with a solid win over the Cubs at Milewski. Sherrell exploded for 193 yards and three more touchdowns to lead the Eaglet rushing attack. Senior Quarterback Ryan Ferguson completed 5 of 7 passes in his first start at QB of the season.

OLSM 20 Dearborn Divine Child 0 at Milewski Field  (4-1)

The Eaglet defense began to gel as St. Mary's handed the Falcons a shutout for the second straight season. The defense held Divine Child to just seven first downs in the contest (40 yards rushing on 27 carries and 37 yards through the air).

OLSM 30 Warren DeLaSalle 7 at ED Memorial  (5-1)

St. Mary's senior running backs Keyvon Barbee and Sherrell wore down a tough and determined Pilots team in the second half. The Eaglets scored three touchdowns in the fourth quarter to pull away in what had been a 7-6 deficit at halftime. The defense again led St. Mary's and held a strong DeLaSalle team to a single touchdown.

OLSM 23 Birmingham Brother Rice 14 at Birmingham Groves HS  (6-1)

St. Mary's jumped out to an early 14-0 lead on the Warriors and avenged their only loss from the 1999 campaign with this win. Seniors Sherrell, Mason and Ferguson paced the offense while Senior DT John Toth and Junior LBs Brad VanGorder and Steve Balone had seven solos each for the Eaglet Defense.

OLSM 33 Madison Heights Bishop Foley 0 at Bishop Foley HS   (7-1)

The Eaglets ran past Bishop Foley as Barbee (155 yards on 7 carries) and Sherrell (106 yards) both topped the century mark. Ferguson threw for 106 yards and 2 TDs to Mason as OLSM racked up 411 yards of total offense.

OLSM 49 Dearborn Fordson 9 at Fordson HS (8-1)

The Tractors entered this contest ranked #9 in the State in Division I but proved to be no match for the Eaglets as Sherrell and Barbee again paved the way with five first half touchdown runs as St. Mary's opened up a 35-3 halftime lead and never looked back.

State Playoffs/District

OLSM 41 Linden 0 at Milewski Field  (9-1)

Five different Eaglets found the end zone as the Big Red Machine downed Linden 41-0 to open the State Tournament run. St. Mary's enjoyed its biggest ground day of the year as the offense amassed 502 yards in rushing on 44 carries. Ferguson continued his consistent play at QB with a TD pass to Mason (44 yards) and no turnovers.

MHSAA District Championship

OLSM 35 Dewitt 14 at Milewski Field  (10-1)

The Panthers of DeWitt arrived at St. Mary's unbeaten and departed with their only loss of the season as the #1 ranked Eaglets rolled toward a showdown with Marine City with a convincing 35-14 victory over DeWitt at Milewski that earned OLSM its second straight District Title.

MHSAA Regional

OLSM 33 Marine City 14 at Milewski Field  (11-1)

Orchard Lake St. Mary's moved a step closer to the state title as they outlasted Marine City and the vaunted wing-t offense, 33-14. Barbee led the Eaglets with 148 yards and a TD while the defense survived the ground attack of Marine City 's Junior Fullback Joe Rivard, who managed 214 yards vs. the bend-but-don't-break Eaglet defense.

MHSAA State Semi-Final

OLSM 22 Detroit St. Martin DePorres 12 at Keyworth Stadium  (12-1)

St. Mary's held off their Catholic League rival from Detroit with a hard-fought victory on the cold turf at Hamtramck 's legendary Keyworth Stadium. Sherrell's defensive play and tough inside running were pivotal as the Eaglets celebrated their return to the 'dome with the win.

MHSAA Division IV State Final

OLSM 26 Coopersville 13 at Pontiac Silverdome (13-1)

St. Mary's won its second straight football State Title and fourth overall (1977-1994-1999-2000) with the win over Coopersville at the Silverdome. The Eaglets were led by the Senior Backfield of QB Ferguson and RBs Sherrell and Barbee as they wore down the Broncos for the win and the State Crown.
