2001 – The Year in Review
Division IV State Football Runners-up (12-2)
OLSM 21 Detroit Denby 0 at Pontiac Silverdome (1-0)
St. Mary's began their defense of the Division IV State Title with a 21-0 victory at the Silverdome. The Eaglet offense rushed for 261 yards and an impressive start to the new season. Senior fullback Brad Van Gorder had 91 yards on 10 carries and a touchdown run of 42 yards.
OLSM 34 Birmingham Detroit Country Day 20 at Country Day (2-0)
The Eaglets showed their heart in this classic battle for the Gridiron trophy. Senior running back John Payne paved the way with 160 yards on 24 carries. Junior Oji Cathey scored twice to help win it for the Eaglets.
Detroit Catholic Central 21 OLSM 7 at Redford HS (2-1)
The Shamrocks of Catholic Central handed St. Mary's what would prove to be the Eaglets only loss of the regular season, 21-7.
OLSM 28 U-D Jesuit 21 (OT) at Keyworth Stadium (3-1)
The Eaglets returned to their winning ways and embarked on a ten-game winning streak with an exciting overtime win over the Cubs at Hamtramck 's historic Keyworth Stadium. Cathey exploded for 171 yards to lead the Eaglet rushing attack. St. Mary's defense yielded 276 yards passing, but three key Eaglet interceptions (2 by Matt Moyski) sealed the fate of the Cubs.
OLSM 35 Dearborn Divine Child 7 at Dearborn Crestwood HS (4-1)
The Eaglet defense began to gel as St. Mary's held the Falcons to 53 yards rushing on 22 carries. Cathey rushed for 125 yards and 2 touchdowns.
OLSM 43 Warren De La Salle 10 at ED Memorial (5-1)
St. Mary's junior running back Mark Sisson rushed for three touchdowns as the Eaglets handled the Pilots. The defense again led St. Mary's and held a strong De La Salle team in check.
OLSM 17 Birmingham Brother Rice 3 at Milewski Field (6-1)
St. Mary's jumped out to an early 10-0 lead on the Warriors and returned to the Detroit Catholic League's Central Division Title hunt with this win. Senior All-State linebacker Brad Van Gorder and Steve Balone had seven solos each for the Eaglet defense.
OLSM 12 Dearborn Divine Child 7 at Keyworth Stadium (7-1)
The Eaglets pulled out a close one as Senior running back John Payne rambled in from 3 yards out on 4 th down with 36.6 seconds remaining in the game.
OLSM 17 Birmingham Brother Rice 3 at Pontiac Silverdome (8-1)
St. Mary's captured the last Detroit Catholic League Prep Bowl Title ever to be won at the Silverdome by defeating the rival Warriors for the second time in as many games this season.
State Playoffs/District
OLSM 34 Grosse Ile 6 at Milewski Field (9-1)
Five different Eaglets found the end zone as the Big Red Machine downed Grosse Ile 34-6 to open the State Tournament run for a “three-peat”.
MHSAA District Championship
OLSM 24 River Rouge 0 at Milewski Field (10-1)
The #1 ranked Eaglets rolled on toward a showdown with Marine City with a convincing 24-0 victory over River Rouge at Milewski Field that earned OLSM its third consecutive District Title.
MHSAA Regional
OLSM 35 Marine City 0 at Milewski Field (11-1)
Orchard Lake St. Mary's moved a step closer to the state title as they outlasted Marine City and the vaunted Wing-T offense, 35-0.
MHSAA State Semi-Final
OLSM 12 Marshall 6 at Jackson (12-1)
St. Mary's held back an awesome Marshall team with a hard-fought victory on the cold turf at Jackson 's Withington Stadium. Balone's defensive play and leadership were pivotal as the Eaglets celebrated their return to the ‘Dome with the win.
MHSAA Division IV State Final
Chesaning 14 OLSM 7 at Pontiac Silverdome (12-2)
St. Mary's fell short in its bid to win a third straight football State Title and fifth overall (1977-1994-1999-2000) as Chesaning returned a punt with a minute left at the Silverdome to capture this classic between Division IV's best.
