While we do not require students to participate in sports, all students are encouraged to do so, and the participation is overwhelming. We believe that athletics is a key component in creating brotherhood and in educating well-rounded students. Traditionally, St. Mary's has a role for both the gifted athlete and the first-time participant. Involvement and a sense of belonging are the keys. Junior varsity and freshmen level teams help to round out a thriving athletic program.
The School's athletic facilities are quite extensive and include two gymnasiums, a crew house, two football fields, two baseball diamonds, a track, lacrosse and soccer fields, tennis courts, an ice arena, a weight room, and many outdoor basketball courts as well as Orchard Lake, which is often used for swimming, wind surfing, fishing, ice skating, and cross-country skiing.
Athletic programs are under the direction of the Athletic Director. Interscholastic and intramural activities are coached by members of the faculty and staff as well as a staff of part-time coaches. Competitions are held against schools of similar or larger size.
As both Athletic Director and Coach, George Porritt has built a reputation as one of the finest educators/coaches in the Catholic League. Any inquiries into St. Mary's athletic programs may be directed to him at (248) 683-0530 or gporritt@stmarysprep.com.
