Big Third Period Lifts Eaglets Over Miners
ALPENA --Overcoming 27 minutes in penalties is normally an impossible task even for the best of teams. On Saturday afternoon with the help of two short-handed goals in the second period to keep the game close, and three third period goals, the St. Mary's Hockey Eaglets prevailed over the tough Negaunee Miners 6-4 in the Alpena Showcase.
A goal by Brandon Kozlowski in the game's first minute gave the Eaglets an early lead. A 5-minute major and 2-minute minor penalty assessed against senior captain Alex Prough put the Miners on the power play for nearly half the first period, and the Miners took full advantage to score two power plays goals to lead at the intermission 2-1.
The penalties continued to pile up against the Eaglets in the second period, particularly when several were of the "phantom" nature. The Miners scored on what seemed to be a perpetual power play. But the Eaglets managed to stay in the game when Alex Prough scored a short-handed goal off an assist from Shane Dwyer at the 10:41 mark, and then five minutes later, defenseman Charlie Semaan scored another short-handed goal unassisted. The Eaglets managed to exit the period tied at 3-3.
The third period saw the return of Eaglet hockey as Kristian Dziubinski, Alex Prough and Shane Dwyer all scored goals to put away the game. The Eaglets outshot the Miners 16-4 in the period and only gave the Miners one power play opportunity. For the game the Eaglets outshot the Miners 29-16, and junior goalie Ryan Dentamaro had 12 saves.
The Eaglets (3-1) return home to host Grosse Ile on Saturday, December 10th, at 8 p.m.
