Eaglets skate to 6-1 win
By DAN MacNEILL Special to The Daily Oakland Press

TRENTON - Gaining even more steam as it heads into the state regionals, Division 3 powerhouse Orchard Lake St. Mary's used a four-goal outburst in the third period Saturday to take a 6-1 victory over Port Huron Northern in the Michigan Interscholastic Hockey League Showcase.

The Eaglets also earned a 4-2 win on Friday against Marquette - ranked No. 6 in Division 1 - in the annual showcase that featured 24 of Michigan's top teams.

Port Huron Northern kept Saturday's game within reach for two periods, but the young team could not penetrate the Eaglets' poised line of defense. When Northern did, senior goalie Shane Trexler was lightning quick.

Trexler stopped two breakaways in the second period and faced 15 total shots. This season, the senior goaltender has been tough to beat, going 10-3-2 overall and 8-1 in his last nine games.

The Huskies (7-14) got on the board quickly in the third period to make it 2-1, but their high point of the day was quickly drowned out when St. Mary's Zach Doyen re-established the two-goal lead.

St. Mary's blueliner Eric Roman led the way with two assists and the game-winner on a power-play point shot. Roman started the year playing forward but has made a smooth transition to the point - especially when given the job of quarterbacking the power play.

Junior defenseman Todd Davis provided assists on the team's first two goals of the game, both on the power play. Another junior, forward Alex Prough, scored a power-play goal and assisted on linemate Patrick Nagorsen's two goals in the third period.

The Eaglets have overcome early-season adversity and are now 11-6-3 while climbing to the No. 3 ranking in Division 3.

St. Mary's will go on to the Catholic League playoffs next week, which will serve as a warmup for regionals and a possible rematch with Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood. On Jan. 11, the Eaglets dealt the Cranes a 3-2 loss, their first of the season. The Cranes dropped their next game against MIHL rival Redford Detroit Catholic Central, but have not lost since.
