Shamrocks Defeat Eaglets in Battle of State Champions
ORCHARD LAKE --In the season opener against defending Division 1 State Champion Detroit Catholic Central at a packed St. Mary's Athletic Center Ice Arena, the Hockey Eaglets ran out of time and lost 8-7. Senior captain Shane Dwyer tied the game in the 1st period on a power play goal, but Shamrocks scored 2 more goals to lead 4-1 at the intermission. The Eaglets stormed back in the 2nd period to score three more goals, but were still down 6-4 at the start of the final period. However, Catholic Central scored early in the 3rd period to take a commanding 7-4 lead. The Hockey Eaglets then scored 2 power plays goals within a 25-second span to narrow the gap to 7-6. Nick Kroll of the Shamrocks scored what turned out to be the winning goal at the 5:02 mark. Shane Dwyer scored another power play goal with 10 seconds left to close the gap to one, but a final flurry by the Eaglets couldn't produce the tying goal.
Senior captain Alex Prough led the way with 4 assists, while senior captain Shane Dwyer had 2 goals and an assist. Senior captain Jon Connors also added a goal and an assist. Sophomore forward Clinton Bourbonais chipped in with 3 assists, while newcomers James Watts, Brandon Kozlowski, Dan Stanisz, Billy Balent and Jon Falvo also contributed to the scoring total. Junior goalie Ryan Dentamaro started the game but was replaced late in the first period by junior goalie Joseph Savona, who finished the game. Catholic Central outshot St. Mary's 36-33, but the Eaglets converted on 4 of 6 power plays, while killing off 3 of Catholic Central's 5 power plays. St. Mary's hosts Dearborn Divine Child on Wednesday, November 23, at 8 p.m.
