Kozlowski's goal enough for Eaglets
DEARBORN--Senior captain Brandon Kozlowski scored the winning goal while on a penalty kill in the final period as the Orchard Lake St. Mary's Ice Eaglets defeated Dearborn Divine Child, 1-0, at the U-M Dearborn Ice Arena Wednesday night.
The first two periods were scoreless as the Eaglets peppered Falcon goalie Jeff Cain with 31 shots. St. Mary's hit the goal posts four times in the second period but none of the caroms found the net. Eaglet goalie Joe Savona had an easier time, stopping nine Falcon shots.
With 4:26 remaining in the final period, Eaglet defenseman Jon Falvo went to the penalty box for hooking, and St. Mary's went on a penalty kill for the third time in the period. Eleven seconds later, Eaglet defenseman Charlie Semaan found Kozlowski on a breakaway, and the senior forward found the net over the goalie's right shoulder.
The Eaglets were controlling the remainder of the period, but with 31 seconds left, found themselves with too many men on the ice. With Kozlowski serving the penalty, the Falcons pulled their goalie for a 6-on-4 advantage. Eaglet forwards Clinton Bourbonais and Billy Balent won crucial face-offs deep in the Eaglet zone to help preserve the victory.
On the night St. Mary's (1-1-0) outshot Divine Child (0-1-0) 49 to 15. The key to the game was that the Eaglets won 42 of 52 faceoffs.
The Eaglets host the Grosse Pointe North Norsemen on Saturday at 8:00 pm.
