Former Eaglet Jeff Petry signs with MSU

The West Bloomfield Eccentric

Former Orchard Lake St. Mary's defenseman Jeff Petry, who verbally committed to Michigan State last spring, has signed his official letter of intent to play hockey for the Spartans next season.

Petry currently plays for Des Moines in the U.S. Hockey League. He leads all team defensemen with six goals among 12 points in 16 games. He recorded 15 points (one goal, 14 assists) during his first season in Des Moines, helping the Buccaneers win the Clark Cup, Tier I championship. He was the Edmonton Oilers' first selection in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, in the second round at No. 45 overall.

"We're very excited to add two large, skilled defensemen to the mix for next year," said MSU coach Rick Comley, who also signed defenseman A.J. Sturges from Wisconsin. "Petry has a tremendous future -- he has great size and offensive skills, and will help us in all areas of our game."

Petry helped St. Mary's win the state Division III championship in 2005, then passed up his senior season to join Des Moines last year.
