St. Mary's loses home opener to Catholic Central
By Jeff Stearns

ORCHARD LAKE--In the first of several battles this season, the Catholic Central Shamrocks prevailed over the St. Mary's Eaglets 3-2 in the Eaglets' home opener at the St. Mary's Athletic Complex Ice Arena Saturday night.

Catholic Cerntral drew first blood on a power play when Jeff Scherrer scored with 10:14 left in the first period off assists from Michael Bourgon and Louis Lemak,  St. Mary's tied the game with an even-strength goal by Tim Hooker with 5:42 left with assists from Kasper Bryniczka and Billy Balent.

With 8:47 left in the second period, CC's Michael Bourgon scored with assists from Jeff Scherrer and Evan Anton.  St. Mary's again tied the game when Tim Hooker scored his second goal with 2:50 left in the period, again with assists from Kasper Bryniczka and Billy Balent.  The second period ended 2-2.

The final period saw both teams rack up penalty minutes, with the Eaglets spending half the period on penalty kills.  CC broke the tie when Jeff Scherrer scored his second power play goal with 7:13 left, again with assists from Michael Bourgon and Evan Anton. The last five minutes saw both teams either on 4-on-4 or on penalty kills.  In the last 2 minutes the Eaglets had a power play opportunity to break the tie, but Billy Balent's charging penalty at 0:54 negated the man-advantage.  Coach Brian Klanow pulled goalie Joe Savona, but the Eaglets could not put the puck past Shamrock goalie Drew Duff.

Eaglet goalie Joe Savona made 24 saves, while CC goalie Duff had 20.

The Eaglets travel to Dearborn to play Divine Child on Wednesday night at 8:00 pm.
