St. Mary's #2 in county preseason rankings

Eaglets set to make another run in Division 1 after double-overtime loss in quarterfinals in '06.

Orchard Lake St. Mary's enters the season as the No. 2-ranked team in the Oakland Press Oakland County preseason high school hockey rankings behind defending Division 3 champion Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook-Kingswood, which garnered a record 13th state championship with a 4-0 win over Grand Rapid Catholic Central in March.

The remainder of the county's preseason top 10 hockey teams are:

3. Novi Catholic Central
4. Birmingham United
5. Stoney Creek
6. Waterford Mott
7. Birmingham Brother Rice
8. Lake Orion
9. Pontiac Notre Dame Prep
10. Waterford Kettering

Five others to watch for:  Auburn Hills Avondale, Clarkston, Novi, Royal Oak, and South Lyon.

St. Mary's faced Catholic Central four times last season, each winning two, with the Eaglets winning the Division 1 Regional Championship.  In this season's opening game at St. Mary's Ice Arena, the No. 3-ranked Shamrocks prevailed 3-2.  The two teams meet again at Compuware Sports Arena on December 8.

After meeting Cranbrook twice in 2005 with the Eaglets winning 3-2 at home and 4-3 in overtime in the 2005 Division 3 Regional Championship, the Eaglets and Cranes played to a 2-2 tie at Cranbrook in January 2006 during their only meeting of the season.  They meet again on January 24, 2007 at Cranbrook
