Titans mercy Chippewa Valley; OLSM rematch up next

BY JAMES COOK OF THE TRAVERSE CITY RECORD-EAGLE

TRAVERSE CITY — Orchard Lake St. Mary and Traverse City West breezed through their opening games at the Traverse City Invitational to set up a rematch of their game earlier this season in which the Titans cost St. Mary its No. 1 ranking.

TC West knocked off the Eaglets 3-2 on Dec. 15. West is ranked No. 6 in Division 1, while Orchard Lake is No. 2.

"We're going to have to be ready to play,” West coach Anthony Palumbo said of the 4:15 p.m. tilt. "They have some added incentive to win other than winning the tournament. We need to match that intensity.”

The Titans (4-4) dispatched of Chippewa Valley in only 30 minutes. The mercy rule was enacted after two periods when West was up 8-0.

Mike Markin and Todd Knaus each scored two goals, with Sean Burke notching a goal and two assists, Jack Sherwood and Collin Thirlby a goal and assist each and Mitch Snider a goal. Markin also added an assist.

Travis Stricker stopped all 11 shots he faced, while the Titans averaged a shot on goal every minute, ending with a 30-11 advantage.

The Eaglets (4-4-2) won 5-0 against Grand Rapids Catholic Central, ranked No. 2 in Division 3, getting goals from five different players. St. Mary's scored two on the power play and one short-handed.

Tony Aukskalnis had a goal and an assist and defenseman Jon Falvo had two assists. Senior captain Brandon Kozlowski had the unassisted short-handed marker.

"When you turn the puck over with those guys, they counter quickly and make you pay,” Palumbo said.

St. Mary's outshot West 34-25 in their first meeting, but the Titans came away with a win in the Eaglets' building.
