Balent leads Orchard Lake St. Mary's to state title

By Bruce Mason/Special to the Detroit News

PLYMOUTH--Two third-period goals from junior Billy Balent proved to be the difference as Orchard Lake St. Mary's won its second title in three years, defeating Marquette, 4-2, in the Division 1 final.

"When they got their opportunities, they made you pay," said Marquette coach Joe Papin, whose team finished 21-4-5. "Heckuva lot of skill. I really didn't see a weakness in them."

The score was tied at 2 after the first period. Senior forward Colin Bloor and junior forward Clinton Bourbonais scored for St. Mary's (16-9-5), while senior forward Allen Lancour and junior forward Brandon Smaby scored for Marquette (21-4-5).

Then Balent took over late.

"They had him pretty locked up in the first and second period," St. Mary's coach Brian Klanow said. "They let him loose and that was a mistake."
