Brighton ties St. Mary's
The West Bloomfield Eccentric
BRIGHTON--In a rematch of last season's Division 1 regional final, won by Brighton in double overtime, the visiting Eaglets rallied from a 3-1 deficit to take a 4-3 lead, but the Bulldogs scored a late power play goal to force overtime. Eight scoreless minutes later, the teams settled for a 4-4 tie.
St. Mary's is 7-5-3 overall. Brighton is 11-4-2.
Brighton scored twice in the first period. Matt Pietila opened the scoring 3:26 into the game, then Jason Fellwock followed with a power play goal two minutes later.
Billy Balent's power play goal, assisted by Charley Semaan and Kasper Bryniczka, trimmed the lead to 2-1, just 1:34 into the second period. But Fellwock scored on Brighton's first shot of the period, with 4:55 remaining, to make it 3-1.
St. Mary's scored the next three goals, starting with Tony Aukskalnis' power play goal, assisted by Brandon Kozlowski, with 2:56 remaining in the second period. With the teams playing four-on-four, Dan Stanisz evened the score 2:57 into the third period, with assists going to Balent and Jon Falvo. Shane Halaas then gave St. Mary's its first lead, with 4:59 left in the period, assisted by Kozlowski and Stanisz.
But after Semaan was called for roughing, Scott Nelson, who assisted on the Bulldogs' first three goals, tied the game on the power play with 2:07 left in regulation time.
Brighton out-shot St. Mary's in overtime, 6-3, including four shots during a power play chance. For the game however, the Eaglets enjoyed a 35-25 shots advantage. Joe Savona was in net for St. Mary's, Mark Lauzon for Brighton.
