Cranes, Eaglets grind out tie

By KELLY McDONALD Of The Oakland Press

BLOOMFIELD HILLS--Professional, college or high school.  Nobody plays the game to tie.

But when two evenly matched teams go at it, sometimes that's what happens.  Orchard Lake St. Mary's skated to a 1-1 tie at Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood Wednesday night.

"You don't play hockey, or anything, to tie," St. Mary's coach Brian Klanow said.  "(Cranbrook) is a well coached tema and it was a well played game.  This was a good, clean game . . . it's good for high school hockey."

The officials would not allow an overtime because the two teams play in separate leagues.  St. Mary's (7-5-4), ranked No. 5 in Division 1, scored first 1:47 into the second period.  But Cranbrook (12-2-1), ranked No. 1 in Division 3, answered less than three minutes later.

"The kids played hard the the goaltending was good for both teams," Cranbrook coach Andy Weidenbach said.  "Maybe it was meant to be."

It must have been because a game-winner by Cranbrook with 1:22 left in the game was negated when the officials ruled the net was pushed off the moorings seconds before Ben Daiek's shot.

Senior Jon Falvo set up the Eaglet's goal when he found an open Steve Tallman.  Tallman did the rest as he skated around the front of the net and beat Cranbrook goaltender Ryan McClure.

"I thought it was a good game to watch.  The shots were close.  There was good up and down action," Klanow said.  "Both teams seemed to play strong when they got the puck in the offensive zone."

Daiek was able to clear the puck out of Cranbrook's zone to sophomore Gregg Leonardo who outskated everybody to the other end.  Leonardo put the puck on fellow sophomore Shot Hotta's stick and Hotta hit the back of the net.
