Defense lets down St. Mary's again

By Jeff Stearns

ORCHARD LAKE--Defensive lapses once again proved to be the undoing of the Orchard Lake St. Mary's Ice Eaglets.  After losing in overtime to De La Salle on Wednesday due to a defensive mistake, the Eaglets let it happen again in losing to Muskegon Mona Shores 3-2 on Friday night.

Clinton Bourbonais opened the scoring for St. Mary's with a power play goal at 12:20 in the first period with assists from Tony Aukskalnis and Billy Balent.  However, there was a sense of gloom as the Eaglets spent half the period killing penalties and being outshot 9-6..

Mona Shores tied the game in the second period despite having to kill off three penalties.  With 5:59 left, Jares Sandness scored off assists from Adam Meloche and Justin Jackowski.  The Sailors again outshot the Eaglets 10-9 for the period.

St. Mary's started the third period on a penalty kill and did so successfully.  But two defensive lapses resulted in Mona Shores' goals, the first at 10:05 when Justin Jackowski scored with an assist from David Whisenant, and then less than a minute later, J.C. Boyd scored with assists from Justin Jackowski and  Adam Meloche.  The Eaglets pulled goalie Joe Savona with a minute remaining and Clinton Bourbonais put the puck past Sailor goalie Justin Grevious to make it a one-goal game.  Billy Balent and Mac Watts assisted on the goal.

With seconds remaining Billy Balent narrowly missed the tying goal, and the Sailors controlled the puck to end the game.  Mona Shores outshot St. Mary's for the period 9-7, and for the game 28-22.

With the loss, St. Mary's record is 8-8-4, and Mona Shores is 12-5.

The Eaglets play again at home on Saturday hosting the Clarkston Wolves at 8 pm.
