Divine Child shuts out St. Mary's

By Jeff Stearns

ORCHARD LAKE--Turnabout is fair play or is it?  Last year the Eaglets shut out the Falcons at home on the day before Thanksgiving, and this year the Falcons (1-0) repaid the favor, winning 5-0.

The first period looked like a defensive struggle with the Eaglets having 3 shots on goal and Falcons having 5.  However, Divine Child made one of theirs count as Nick Montoni bounced a shot past Eaglet goalie Devon Carr with 3:31 left in the period.  The Eaglets had to kill off three penalties during the period.

There was more action and fewer penalties in the second period, as the Falcons again outshot the Eaglets, 10-9.  With 9:39 left in the period, Angelo Berlasi scored for Divine Child with an assist from Joe Grefke.  Two and a half minutes later, the Falcons extended their lead to 3 goals as Anthony Stankiewicz beat Eaglet goalie Devon Carr with an assist from Zack DeBiasi.  The Eaglets put some pressure on Falcon goalie Peter Brewis late in the period but could not put the puck past him.

The first half of the final period was a disaster for the Eaglets.  Forty seconds into the period, Falcon Jon Ponte scored with an assist from Joe Grefke on Divine Child's first shot of the period.  Then on a power play, Joe Grefke scored on the Falcons' fifth shot of the period with 9:31 left.  That made it a five goal game, and Eaglet coach Brian Klanow gave goalie Carr the rest of the game off, replacing him with sophomore Chris Sullivan.  Sullivan's stopped all 6 shots that he faced.

Falcon goalie Peter Brewis stopped all 19 Eaglets shots he faced.

St. Mary's (0-2) hosts Hamilton High School of Ontario on Saturday, December 2, 2007, at 2 p.m., and on Sunday, December 3, 2007, at 11 a.m.
