Eric Roman commits to Wayne State hockey
By Mike Rosenbaum of The West Bloomfield Eccentric
Orchard Lake St. Mary's alumnus Eric Roman, a member of the Eaglets' 2005 Division 3 state champion hockey team, has committed to play at Wayne State University next season.
Wayne State is a Division 1 hockey school that competes in the College Hockey America (CHA) conference.
The 20-year-old Roman has played with the Alpena Ice Diggers of the North American Hockey League the past two seasons. A strong two-way defenseman, Roman scored seven goals and assisted on 17 others through 55 games this season, including six goals among 13 points on the power play.
“I am extremely happy for Eric and his family. He is getting a chance to play at the D-1 level in the Detroit area,” said Alpena's general manager and head coach, Kenny Miller.
“Eric stepped in last year and played a big role with our hockey club and he has improved every day since he got here and his hard work has paid off for him.”
Roman will be one of two West Bloomfield natives on Wayne State's team next season. The other is Adam Smith, who'll be a junior forward.
The Warriors, who won just six games in 2005-06, improved to 12-21-2 this season and finished with a 5-0-2 run before losing in the CHA quarterfinals.
Roman is also one of three members of the 2005 St. Mary's squad who'll play Division 1 hockey next season. Patrick Nagorsen has committed to Western Michigan, while Jeff Petry signed a letter of intent to skate for Michigan State. Two other members of the 2005 team are playing for Division III Salem State – Zach Doyen and Alex Prough.
An earlier St. Mary's graduate, Josh Schaffer, a junior at the Air Force Academy, is competing in NCAA tournament action this weekend. The Falcons meet top-ranked Minnesota Saturday. The winner of that contest meets either Michigan or North Dakota in Sunday's regional final.
Schaffer is fifth on the Falcons with six goals and 19 points through 35 games this season. Schaffer earned the team's most improved player award as a sophomore, when he scored 10 goals among 23 points in 31 games.
