St. Mary's beats Detroit Jesuit in OT

ORCHARD LAKE--Clinton Bourbonais scored the winning goal on a power play 55 seconds into overtime as the Eaglets defeated the Detroit Jesuit Cubs , 4-3, on Saturday night, with assists from Kasper Bryniczka and Billy Balent. The power play was set up when Cub Stuart Copley was called for hooking with 56 seconds left in regulation.
The Cubs scored first in the game when Mike Yanis put a shot past Eaglet goalie Devon Carr at the 8:30 mark of the first period with assists from Nick Gibbs and Nolan Stempin. St. Mary's tied the game at 7:35 when Tony Auksnalnis scored off an assist from Shane Halaas. The Eaglets took the early lead when senior forward Colin Bloor scored off assists from Charlie Semaan and Jon Falvo. The Cubs tied the game when freshman Ian Monkman scored a short-handed goal on a breakaway.
The second period saw the Eaglets pepper Cub goalie Mike Raymond with 16 shots but no goals, as both teams had to kill off 5-on-3 penalties. The Cubs managed but 5 shots on goal in the period.
A late second period penalty to Eaglet captain Mac Watts set the stage for a wild third period, as the Eaglets began the period on a penalty kill. The Eaglets spent the first half on the period killing a succession of penalties, but took the lead when Billy Balent scored a short-handed goal at 8:14 off assists from Clinton Bourbonais and Jon Falvo. Included in that stretch was another 5-on-3 penalty against the Eaglets. The Cubs tied the game at 5:14 just as an Eaglet penalty ended as Cub Stuart Copley scored with an assist from Mike Yanis. St. Mary's had two opportunities to win the game in regulation on power plays but couldn't find the net until overtime.
Junior goalie Devon Carr stopped 17 of 20 shots for the Eaglets (7-5-2). Senior goalie Mike Raymond had 41 saves for the Detroit Jesuit (2-11-0).
The Eaglets travel to Brighton on Friday night, January 19, 2007.
